Maritime Day!
Hot Dog Picnic &
Activities!
Free & Open to the Public
…at the NC Maritime Museum’s
Gallants Channel Annex Property
Enter at Gate #1
(just past Town Creek Marina)
Sunday, May 18
11AM – 3pm
Enjoy an old
fashioned, family-oriented picnic at the N.C. Maritime Museum’s expansion site
at Gallants Channel!
Come and sail in
the museum’s fleet of traditional wooden boats, or cast a line with
a cane pole, join in games or just relax and enjoy the music and
spectacular view of Gallants Channel and the surrounding waterway.
The museum’s
site on Gallants Channel, once a menhaden processing facility, is
the site for expansion of the N.C. Maritime Museum in Beaufort. The
Friends invite you to take a few hours to see for yourself the
potential this property has for the future enjoyment and education
of your children and grandchildren.
At the docks for viewing will be the 71-foot Royaliste, a square tops’l ketch
refit to specifications of an 18th
a century dispatch
gunboat/bomb ketch. The Royaliste is a living history
interpretation and reenactment vessel that emphasizes period sail
training, mock battle sails, and an extensive “floating artifact
museum.”
Captain Sinbad’s
Meka II will be also be docked alongside for on shore
viewing.
Again this year
is the breeches buoy demonstration and visitors will be able to
actually hang in an antique breeches buoy – over land (of course)!
Historically, the U.S. Lifesaving Service’s preferred means of
rescue from vessels near the shore involved using the beach
apparatus, all loaded onto a cart pulled down the beach by men or by
horse. On the cart was a Lyle gun, line in its faking box, powder
for the gun and a breeches buoy.
All Maritime Day
activities are free and open to the public including lunch, which
will be served throughout the day. Reservations are appreciated but
are not required. You may contact
boating@ncmm-friends.org or call The Friends office at

During Maritime
Day information will be available about The Friends of the Museum
and the myriad of ways the organization provides museum support.
