The Beaufort Oars

The Beaufort Oars evolved out of a few rowers’ dreams of having a community based water related activity that would involve FUN, COMPETITION, and EXERCISE. A dedicated group envisioned boats full of rowers pulling down Taylor's Creek, rowing out to Shackleford and holding competitions between local crews. In 1991 Dizy Brown established the Beaufort Oars and two boats were built at the NC Maritime Museum in Beaufort using an adaptation of a six-oared Cornish gigs.

In 2001 the Beaufort Oars became part of the Friends of the Museum, NC Maritime Museum and started rowing out of the museum’s Gallant Channel Annex.

The group is open to all active Friends of the Museum members and trys to best accommodate the multitude of interests of those that participate. There are volunteer opportunities to help the club thrive. Needed are volunteers for maintenance, administrative tasks, and, as youth programs develop, people who would be interested in working with young adults.

The primary goal is to provide a community based rowing club that encourages enjoyment on the water, social activity, exercise and competition.
