Friends Supported Programs » Traditional Spritsail Family Sailing

Traditional Small Craft Programs
Traditional sailing classes are offered on a variety of the traditional small craft that are part of the Museums in the water fleet. These programs provide the opportunity to learn how the local conditions influenced the design and construction of the small vessels that were once used extensively for fishing and transportation.

Historic Beaufort is the perfect backdrop for experiencing just what it was like to sail these versatile craft and the Museum provides the resources with which to study the design and construction techniques used in building regionally significant small craft.

Traditional Boat Handling
Age Group:
18 and up
Price: $60 ($85 without Friends Membership)
Hands-on water time will be the emphasis throughout the day (9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., with a lunch break). Students will spend most of the class time on the water, with the opportunity to compare the handling characteristics of a variety of different traditional small craft. Differences in construction, hull shape and historic use will be discussed using boats included in the ongoing Traditional Boat Program. Efficient rowing and sculling techniques will also be demonstrated. Spritsails, Sharpies, and traditional sail plans will be used to cover rigging and sail handling with gaff, sprit and lug rigs.

One Week Traditional Boat Handling
Age Group:
18 and up
Price: $200 ($225 without Friends Membership)
In addition to plenty of sailing time there will be discussions and demonstrations covering lofting, tools, building techniques, and sail making. Differences in construction, hull shape and historic use will be discussed using boats included in the ongoing Traditional Boat Program. Efficient rowing and sculling techniques will also be demonstrated. Spritsails, Sharpies, and traditional style rowboats will be used to cover rigging and sail handling with gaff, sprit and lug rigs. Each day (9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., with a lunch break), students will have the opportunity to compare the handling characteristics of a variety of different traditional small craft. The week typically finishes up with the Fall-In-The-Water Meet of the local chapter of the Traditional Small Craft Association (TSCA). This is an annual sailing and social event held on Bogue Sound. Various traditional craft will be on hand – along with a group of wooden boat enthusiasts from around the region.

Traditional Spritsail Family Sailing
Cost: $ 150 (for a group of up to six)
Cost: $ 175 without Friends membership

Time: 10 am – 3 pm (bring a simple picnic lunch)
Enjoy the historic Beaufort waterfront from an historic sailing vessel! The Spritsail is a rig that was developed locally for fishing and oystering in the shallow sounds. These boats are stable and capable of carrying a group of 6. The historical significance of this rig will be discussed as you sail the waters of Taylors Creek and Back Sound. Proper sail trim, boat handling and seamanship skills will be covered while everyone gets a turn at the helm.

Private Sailing Lessons are available by appointment. Private lessons are ideal for those individuals or families that want special attention or have limited time. This is a great way to get an introduction to the sport of sailing, or to practice your skills and gain confidence on the water. The fee for private lessons ranges from $25-$60 per hour (depending on the boat) (2 hour minimum) and we provide the boat, all safety gear, and expert instruction. Call Brent at 728-1638 for more information.
