Congratulations to John Crown, winner of the 2008 Skiff Raffle!
A beautifully crafted 12-foot “Acorn” sailing dinghy was built for the 2008 skiff raffle as a fundraiser for the museum’s Harvey W. Smith Watercraft Center. At the Friends annual membership meeting on December 7, Dr. John Costlow, Friends founder and past president, pulled the lucky ticket for this elegant lap strake lug-rigged dinghy. Volunteers built the cypress and plywood sailboat in the museum’s Watercraft Center on the Beaufort waterfront. This boatbuilding project is financed and supported by the Friends of the Museum, as are many of the museum’s regular programs.
The 2009 raffle boat is a 16’ Swampscot Dory. Be a winner in more ways than one – support your maritime museum by buying a raffle ticket, or two! Tickets are available in the museum store. (You do not have to be present to win.)

This year’s annual fall fundraiser,The Museum In Lights, was a huge success!
Attendees were treated to a special viewing of artifacts from the Queen Anne’s Revenge as well as an opportunity to see the Landing Craft from WWII that is currently being restored in the museum’s Watercraft Center. This event also gave the Friends an opportunity to welcome our new Museum Director, Joe Schwarzer, who was our guest of honor for the evening. Delectable fare was catered by Floyd’s 1921, and Morehead City’s own Stormy Weather Jazz Band provided fantastic jazz classics. All proceeds go to the Friends of the NC Maritime Museum and will be used to continue to support the Museum and its world class exhibits and programs. A special thanks to our dedicated group of volunteers who helped make this event such a big success!

2008 TSCA Fall “In The Water” Meet
The Fall get together at the Gallants Channel Annex was a success in spite of the cold rain and blustery conditions that precluded sailing! There were spritsails in the water, but the conditions kept the prudent mariner ashore. The slow cooked pig (donated and prepared by our own Brent Creelman) provided a nice warm lunch on a nasty day. Despite no sailing a good time was had by the 25 or so that braved the conditions! One adventurous sailor (you know who you are, Guy) did manage to get a quick sail in on his recently redone Bullseye. Les Sadler agreed to serve as TSCA Chapter President, again (Thanks Les!). Les continues as a very strong volunteer at the Watercraft Center Model Shop and is the unofficial official skipper of the new 25' Pride of Taylors Creek. Les is looking for input on how to make our 2009 TSCA events even better than those of 2008!

The Friends and volunteers have been hard at work during the last several months on the lawn at Gallants Channel, and their work has certainly paid off! The grass is very green with only a couple of spots that aren't covered. We worked on this past Thursday evening, breaking up the ground and fertilizing. Our goal is to get the entire lawn covered in grass before the end of this growing season, and we are very pleased with the progress we have made! The work parties are a fun way to get involved with The Friends and a great way to meet new people and enjoy cold beverages together afterwards. If you would like to volunteer during the next Work Party, please contact Brent Creelman at
252-728-2762 for more information.

Beaufort and Carteret County and provided support to NC Maritime Museum
throughout the years, playing a significant role in establishing the library
