Introduction
The
North Carolina Maritime Museum collects and preserves both
the objects and the ideas that make the North Carolina coast a
unique place to live and visit. These things are important parts
of our state's history. They help us to understand that maritime
is about things on or near the sea. Old boats, decoys, tools, as
well as living and mounted fish are some of the items on
display. These are things that show us how our parents and
grandparents lived.
The
building that houses the museum is styled after the old Life
Saving Stations that dotted the Outer Banks. The crews that
manned these stations saved hundreds of victims from ships that
wrecked on the stormy shores. The grave danger of the shoals and
turbulent waters off the Outer Banks earned the area the name,
"Graveyard of the Atlantic." Aquariums and other
exhibits tell of the many species of life that call the coastal
waters home and provide means of survival and livelihood for the
people who make their living from and by the sea.
